Intention in Relationships: Stepping Into the New Year With an Open Heart

5 min read

The turning of the new year, marked in the Jewish calendar as Rosh Hashanah, isn't only about rituals and symbolic foods on the table. It's the moment we pause and ask ourselves: where do we stand in the most meaningful relationship of our lives? Is our relationship actually growing, or is it just "happening" in the background, squeezed between everything else?

Intention is exactly the difference between a relationship that simply happens to us, and a relationship we consciously choose, and keep choosing, day after day. This is true for women and men alike, for anyone who wants a relationship built on awareness rather than habit. And because it comes down to a choice, it's worth starting with the most basic question of all.

Why Do We Even Get Married?

Why do we get married in the first place? Not because "that's what people do," and not only out of a passing feeling of love, but out of an understanding that the bond between two partners is, first and foremost, a spiritual one. When we see a relationship as a shared spiritual journey, rather than simply a partnership for managing daily life, it opens the door to real unity and mutual healing, the kind that doesn't happen on its own, but is built through intention.

Part of that connection is understanding that each of us has one thing that matters most to us in a relationship, something without which it's hard to feel at peace, and truly at home. Part of the work of being a couple is learning to recognize that one thing in our partner, and making sure to provide it, so there can be real peace in the home. Because peace in the home isn't just "not fighting." It's something much bigger: it's a matter of frequency. A frequency of calm and love at home doesn't stay within four walls. It reaches our children, our close circle, our community, and ultimately, the whole world.

And once we understand how far that frequency travels, we understand why the new year is exactly the right time to pause and check it.

Why Now

The new year gives us a natural framework to stop. Not to "fix" our partner, but to make real space for personal soul-searching, genuine time, in which each of us asks:

  • What kind of person do I want to be inside this relationship?

  • What do I give freely, and what do I give out of fear of loss?

  • Where do I run from closeness, and where do I run from boundaries?

  • When was the last time I truly stopped to check what's happening inside me, before checking what's happening between us?

This soul-searching isn't another item on a to-do list. It's the foundation everything else is built on, because we can't truly meet another person deeply without first meeting ourselves. And the real question is how to actually do that, not just as a nice idea in our heads, but as something we genuinely feel in the body.

A Community Release Ceremony: Letting Go and Renewing

One beautiful, tangible way to do this soul-searching is through a Tashlich-inspired ceremony, an age-old tradition tied to the Jewish New Year, of standing at the water's edge and "casting away" whatever no longer serves us, so we can enter the new year lighter and clearer.

This year, for the fifth year in a row, our community is holding a special release ceremony on Hollywood Beach, in the Miami area, on Sunday, September 20th at 10:00 AM, led by Liat Berko. The ceremony blends this ancient practice with breathwork, body-based work, and inner reflection through the Euphoria Method, so that release doesn't stay an abstract idea, but becomes something you truly feel in your body:

  • Releasing what no longer serves us

  • Connecting with the healing energy of water

  • Activating love, intention, appreciation, and trust

  • Opening space for clarity, renewal, and new beginnings

If you're in or near Miami, this is a beautiful opportunity to come as a couple, or on your own, and step into the new year with a more open heart.

And once the heart is a little more open and clear, we can ask the simplest question of all, the one that quietly restarts everything, every single morning.

The Question That Matters Most: What Am I Doing for the Other Person Today?

There's one question that can change an entire day, and really, an entire relationship: when I wake up in the morning, what am I doing today for my partner?

Not out of obligation, and not because "they deserve it." But out of a deep understanding that this is, in fact, the most important thing there is. Because everything else, communication, trust, intimacy, working through the small arguments, rests on this, and tends to fall into place because of it. When our daily intention is directed toward the other person, and not only toward ourselves, the relationship stops being "just another area of life" and becomes a place where both people grow together.

And from that same daily intention, it's worth looking honestly at what's already happening in our relationship right now, because there's an invitation hiding there too.

Your Relationship Is a Mirror

Everything that comes up in a relationship, jealousy, the need for control, fear of abandonment, lack of intimacy, the difficulty of asking for what we truly need, isn't "a relationship problem." It's an invitation to recognize a part of ourselves that's waiting to be healed. And when we do that work from the right place, the relationship doesn't just "improve," it becomes an arena of real, mutual growth, for men and women alike.

It's exactly for this journey, from the mirror, to healing, to a relationship rebuilt from the inside out, that the course "12 Gates to Love Synergy" was created.

About the Course: 12 Gates to Love Synergy

12 Gates to Love Synergy is an online course, a journey through 12 gates, designed to walk with you step by step from wherever you are today, toward a relationship built from inner wholeness rather than lack. The course combines psychology, somatic bodywork, and ancient spiritual wisdom, so that each "gate" works simultaneously on the emotional, physical, and relational levels. It's open to women and men alike, and is designed especially for couples, though this inner work is meant for anyone who wants an authentic relationship, whether you're currently in one or still on your way to it.

The course runs live online on Zoom, once a week on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM EST, and begins on October 13th, right after the Jewish Holidays. Because it's a fully online course, you can join from anywhere in the world. It's the perfect timing to step into the new year, not just with intentions on paper, but with real tools and real support along the way.

If you've felt, this past year, that you want a different kind of relationship, deeper, more mature, freer of old patterns, now is the time to register and give yourself this gift for the new year.

Space is limited. Full details and registration: www.liatberko.com/booking

May you have a sweet and meaningful new year, a year of listening, healing, and renewed connection at home, in your relationship, and in your heart. May we all find real peace in our homes, and from it, a frequency of love that spreads throughout the entire world.
